Arctic Monkeys – “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not”

Hace bien poco hablaba de The Last Shadow Puppets el grupo paralelo de Alex Turner, el lider de Arctic Monkeys,hoy es el turno de estos útltimos y su primer disco de nombre infinito “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not”. Un disco, según ellos, conceptual sobre la vida nocturna en los clubs del Norte de Inglaterra que les puso en el mapa en el año 2006 y que tuvo en un enorme éxito pricipalmente en UK, pero también en el restp del mundo.
A mi me llamó la atención su primer single, “I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor”, una enorme canción de punk-pop que al escucharla , y sobre todo al ver el vídeo, hizo que Alex Turner me recordara al primer Paul Weller de The Jam. Enorme temazo, imposible no mover los pies a su ritmo. El resto del disco no da respiro tampoco porque estos “monos del ártico” no levantan el pie del acelerador en ningún momento, y ahí tenemos “The View From The Afternoon”, “Dancing Shoes” o la que cierra el disco “A Certain Romance”. Yo he seguido la carrera de Arctic Monkeys y a pesar de que no han repetido el trallazo de su primer single han seguido haciendo grandes discos como el último “AM” que para mí fue uno de los mejores de 2013.

Snowed In At Wheeler Street – Kate Bush. Una historia de amor atemporal del incendio de Roma a la caída de las Torres de New York. Impresionantes Kate Bush y Elton John. He leido hoy en RockdeLux que esta era la canción más floja del último disco de Kate Bush y para mi es la canción del año, está claro que para gustos hay colores.
Your Young voice – King Creosote & Jon Hopkins. La típica canción que aparece un día en tu vida y que sabes que no saldrá nunca. Una auténtica preciosidad.
Calgary – Bon Iver. Curioso, que dos de las canciones más bonitas de este año, esta y Calgary ’88, tengan a la ciudad canadiense en su título. Una de esas casualidades que las hacen aún más magnéticas.

Mejores Discos Internacionales de 2011

1. Destroyer – Kaputt

Kaputt es el disco que Paddy McAloon podría haber hecho perfectamente en este 2011, y eso es decir mucho. Dan Béjar no es Paddy, no lo es, pero se ha marcado un pedazo de disco con este Kaputt. Canciones inmensas como “Chinatown”, “Downtown” o la que le da título y un conjunto total precioso, insisto, al mas puro estilo Prefab Sprout, han echo de este disco mi favorito de este año.

2. PJ Harvey – Let England Shake

Me costó entrar en este disco, lo reconozco, y es que nunca he sido muy fan de la buena de Polly Jean, demasiado dura para un tío tan “poppy” como yo, pero alguna buena crítica leída y un par de escuchas del disco y me acabé enganchando a este “Let England Shake”. Un caramelo envenenado, eso es, trincheras de la primera guerra mundial, colinas donde aún resuenan batallas lejanas, un mundo en guerra. Una Poly Jean igual de dura que en sus primeras entregas pero en el fondo que no en la forma. Yo la prefiero así.

3. Beirut – The Rip Tide

El primer disco de Beirut, “Gulag Orkestar”,me encantó, el segundo “The Flying Club Cup” me pareció vulgar, pero con el tercero “The Rip Tide” he vuelto a caer en las redes de Zach Condon. Este tío lo tiene, y se ha marcado un pedazo de disco. .

4. Girls – Father Son Holy Ghost

El de Girls, al igual que el de Beirut, también es el tercer disco, si contamos con el EP “Broken Dreams Club”, sin embargo a diferencia de Beirut, Girls no han hecho si no crecer disco a disco y para mí esta es su mejor obra y uno de los discos del año, sin duda.

5. Kate Bush – 50 Words For Snow

Kate Bush es una de las grandes, y lo seguirá siendo, fuera de modas, fuera de estilos y fuera de convenciones que no sirven para nada, ha hecho dos discos este año, uno con revisiones de obras anteriores “Director’s Cut” y otro este “50 Words For Snow” y los dos son imprescindibles, al menos para mí , claro. Por si fuera poco ha hecho la canción del año, “Snowed In At Wheeler Street”. Kate forever!!
