Sufjan Stevens – “Illinois”

Sufjan Stevens, es un tipo que cuando editó su tercer disco, “Michigan” (2003) dijo que tenía un proyecto (como yo con #undiscoaldía) de editar un disco por cada estado de los Estados Unidos de América, este “Illinois” (2005) fue el segundo de ese proyecto (aunque más tarde reconoció que, como dirían mis hijos, se había tirado un triple y el proyecto no era tal). “Illinois” es una obra grandiosa, 74 minutos (73:59 para ser exactos) de puro placer musical, una delicatessen pop (puede que folk) con Sufjan Stevens en plan artista renacentista, componiendo, produciendo y tocando un montón de instrumentos. Adicionalmente se hizo acompañar de una sección de cuerdas y un coro, todo ello para convertir al álbum en un clásico instantáneo. “Illinois” está en mi top 10 particular de discos del siglo XXI, al lado de otros clásicos ya, como el “69 Love Songs” de The Magnetic Fields o “Funeral” de Arcade Fire y si el disco está en esa lista Sufjan Stevens también es uno de mis favoritos de este siglo, porque “Illinois” no es flor de un día, todo lo contrario, de hecho su último disco “Carrie & Lowell” fue mi segundo disco favorito del año pasado solo detrás del enorme Robert Forster. Y si hablamos de canciones en el disco hay que hablar de “John Wayne Gacy, Jr.”, la historia del asesino en serie tristemente conocido como el payaso asesino, de la preciosa “Casimir Pulanski Day” y como no de la enorme “Chicago”. Un discazo por el que no pasará el tiempo.

The Arcade Fire – “Funeral”

FuneralPaseaba una tarde de febrero de 2005 por una tienda de discos, bueno en realidad una megatienda  de origen francés (no haré publicidad), ya que en 2005 eran muy pocas las tiendas de discos que quedaban, en aquella época aún tenían la costumbre de poner un disco, normalmente una novedad, para que los clientes lo escucharan, cuando empezó a sonar “Neighborhood 1 (Tunnels)”. En aquel momento ya hacía mucho tiempo que no me pasaba que una canción me gustara así a la primera escucha. Recuerdo que me paré, terminé de escuchar la canción y me fui a ver que grupo era aquel, Arcade Fire  me dijo el amable dependiente, cogí el disco que por supuesto me llevé a casa. 

Arcade Fire, son un combo canadiense, en el que se da la “extraña circunstancia”  de que crítica y público se ponen de acuerdo, tampoco es que sus cifras de ventas hayan sido multimillonarias, pero si que se han convertido en un grupo conocido y reconocido. Volviendo al disco, lo que me encontré aquella tarde al volver al casa, a parte de aquel “Neighborhood 1 (Tunnels)” que abría el disco y me había cautivado es un montón de enormes canciones de pop barroco, hay arreglos de cuerdas (violines, chelos, arpas…),  o de art-rock, los límites no los tengo claros, pero si es cierto que hay momentos que me recuerdan a los mejores Talking Heads, quizás bastante más accesibles que ellos en sus primeros discos. Complicadísimo destacar canciones, ya he hablado de “Neighborhood 1 (Tunnels)”, pero si me tengo que quedar con otra más sería “Rebellion (Lies)”

“Funeral” está entre los mejores discos de lo que llevamos de siglo XXI, de eso no hay duda, y a Arcade Fire hay que seguirles la pista, no han fallado en ninguno de sus tres discos posteriores y en concreto el último de 2014, “Reflektor”, también es increíble.
