Lambchop – «Nixon»
Es curioso cómo se a veces hay grupos o discos que se relacionan en tu cabeza de manera inconsciente aunque en realidad no tengan mucho que ver. Eso es lo que me pasa con Lambchop y Tindersticks, cuando escucho un disco de Lambchop inmediatamente pienso en Tindersticks y al revés, puede ser porque empecé a escuchar a ambos grupos a la vez o porque les pongo a ambos en el saco de mis grupos/discos nocturnos. Este «Nixon» fue la piedra de toque para iniciarme en una discografía inmaculada, una maravilla desde el primer al último disco que han editado, Lamchop iniciaron su carrera muy cerca de la música country y evolucionaron desde ahí a posiciones más cercanas al SOUL orquestado, ese que tanto me gusta, el falsete de su líder Kurt Wagner es la marca indiscutible de la casa. Este «Nixon» (2000) es para mí su mejor disco, un disco que tiene auténticas gemas como «Grumpus», mi favorita, «You Masculine You», o las preciosas «The Distance From Her To There», «The Book I Haven’t Read» y «Nashville parent.
Esto es otro de esos discos sin edad que por mucho que pase el tiempo siguen estando ahí ,ajenos a las modas, con una belleza serena e inalterable. «Nixon» es un discazo, lo mires como lo mires.

Rufus Wainwright – «Want Two»
Creo que esta fue la única vez en mi vida que coincidí con Rockdelux en la elección de la mejor canción internacional del año, «The One You Love» de Rufus Wainwright. Fue fácil, era la mejor del año con mucha diferencia. Había leído buenas críticas de este «Want Two», era su cuarto álbum pero hasta entonces no había prestado atención a este americano-canadiense, hijo de artistas y abanderado del mundo gay. Decidí escuchar el disco, su potente voz y su pop orquestado, tan de mi gusto, ya sabéis Scott Walker, The Divine Comedy, Tindersticks….es probable que en ocasiones sea excesivo en la propuesta pero yo se lo perdono, como lo hago con Marc Almond, en algunos de sus discos, porque aquí hay grandes canciones interpretadas con pasión y mucho arte, ahí están «The Art Teacher», «Gay Messiah» y «Old Whore’s Diet» (está última a dúo con Antony Hegarty de Antony and the Johnsons que también tendrá su entrada por aquí) para demostrarlo. Y por si fuera poco «The One You Love», el temazo que si escuchas una vez no puedes dejar de tararear.

Tindersticks – «Tindersticks»
Otro de mis discos «nocturnos», otro disco con una preciosa portada, otro disco más con una flamenca en la portada, esta vez vestida eso sí. El primer disco de los Tindersticks (1993) en pleno boom del Britpop, supuso una irrupción más que interesante en el panorama musical. Siempre me ha encantado el estilo conocido como pop de cámara (The Divine Comedy, Belle and Sebastian….), pero en Tindersticks hay dos factores diferenciadores, la profunda voz de barítono de su líder Stuart A. Staples y las orquestaciones por momentos cercanas al jazz. Ambos factores, que son la marca de la casa, quedan claramente patentes en este álbum, un disco brumoso, nocturno, claustrofóbico por momentos pero profundamente bonito. El arranque con «Nectar» ya marca el camino y el listón no baja en los setenta y siete minutos repartidos en las veintiuna canciones que componen el disco, doble en su versión en vinilo. Yo llegué a los Tindersticks a través de, precisamente, un single que no está en el disco, aunque se editó en la misma época, «A Marriage Made In Heaven» un dueto con Isabella Rossellini brutal, y que está en mi lista de canciones favoritas de siempre. Los Tindersticks son uno de mis grupos de cabecera, una apuesta segura.
