The Divine Comedy – “A Secret History… The Best of the Divine Comedy”

The Divine Comedy es otro de mis grupos favoritos, lo conté hace algunos años cuando hablaba de una de mis canciones favoritas de siempre, “Your Dadddy’s Car” y lo es desde hace mucho tiempo, desde los días de su cuarto disco, “Casanova”, el disco por el que conocí a Neil Hannon, el nombre del líder absoluto y la mayor parte del tiempo único miembro de The Divine Comedy. El pop orquestal es uno de mis estilos favoritos, en este largo año lo he contado unas cuantas veces , lo hice cuando hablaba de Tindersticks, Belle and Sebastian, Nick Drake y sobre todo Scott Walker, al que Neil Hannon reconoce como su principal influencia.

Elegí este recopilatorio de su primera época, la que va de 1990 a 1999, porque fue el me introdujo definitivamente en el universo de The Divine Comedy, y demuestra el nivel de sus seis primeros discos, diecisiete canciones increíbles de principio a fin. “National Express”, “Something For The Weekend”, “Becomimg More Like Alfie”, “The Summerhouse”, “Your Daddy’s Car”, la increíble “Tonight We Fly”…. Adicionalmente se publico un edición especial con un disco con canciones en directo y versiones de Bowie, Kraftwerk y Talk Talk, casi nada. Una maravilla de principio a fin.

Rufus Wainwright – “Want Two”

rufusCreo que esta fue la única vez en mi vida que coincidí con Rockdelux en la elección de la mejor canción internacional del año, “The One You Love” de Rufus Wainwright. Fue fácil, era la mejor del año con mucha diferencia. Había leído buenas críticas de este “Want Two”, era su cuarto álbum pero hasta entonces no había prestado atención a este americano-canadiense, hijo de artistas y abanderado del mundo gay. Decidí escuchar el disco, su potente voz y su pop orquestado, tan de mi gusto, ya sabéis Scott Walker, The Divine Comedy, Tindersticks….es probable que en ocasiones sea excesivo en la propuesta pero yo se lo perdono, como lo hago con Marc Almond, en algunos de sus discos, porque aquí hay grandes canciones interpretadas con pasión y mucho arte, ahí están “The Art Teacher”, “Gay Messiah” y “Old Whore’s Diet” (está última a dúo con Antony Hegarty de Antony and the Johnsons que también tendrá su entrada por aquí) para demostrarlo. Y por si fuera poco “The One You Love”, el temazo que si escuchas una vez no puedes dejar de tararear.

Scott Walker – “Scott”

scott Mi conexión con Scott Walker, vino a través de uno de mis grupos favoritos The Divine Comedy, como ya conté por aquí. Para Neil Hannon, el líder de The Divine Comedy Scott Walker era su mayor influencia y eso me bastó para interesarme en su obra. Cuando empecé a escucharle, en concreto su primera obra en solitario, me quedé prendado de este disco. La voz de barítono de Scott, los arreglos orquestales de las canciones, y un gusto enorme para elegirlas, hacen del álbum una preciosidad. Las canciones  son mezcla de obra propia y versiones de temas de la época,  entre las versiones tres del gran maestro de la canción francesa Jacques Brel, uno de los ídolos de Scott. Yo me quedo con dos de esas versiones como mis favoritas, “Mathilde” y “Amsterdam”, pero este “Scott” es un gran disco y para mí la piedra angular del pop orquestado.

The Last Shadow Puppets – “The Age of the Understatement”

Casualidades de la vida, justo en el momento en que, con mi ya famoso método aleatorio, me toca escribir sobre este disco que fue editado en 2008 se anuncia la esperada vuelta de Last Shadow Puppets siete años después, cuando ya nadie daba un duro porque se produjera. El grupo esta formado por Alex Turner, el líder de los Arctic Monkeys, y Miles Kane, el líder de The Rascals. Este “The Age of the Understatement”, su primer disco, tiene un sonido que a mi siempre me ha encantado, pop con arreglos orquestales (1.000 violines que diría Kiko Amat) que conectan directamente con los primeros discos de Scott Walker, aunque con un pulso mas cercano al Rock que lo que hacía Neil Hannon en mi adorado grupo The Divine Comedy. El disco entra a la primera, canciones vibrantes, estribillos brillantes y violines por todos los lados, muchos violines. Un disco que te alegrara el día.

Bonus. Las orquestaciones del disco son obra de Owen Pallet, un artista al que hay que seguir la pista. Sus colaboraciones Arcade fire, o su discos como Final Fantasy o bajo su nombre son más que interesantes.
