Tengo un cariño muy especial a este disco, el primero en solitario de Edwyn Collins, dice mi firma en el vinilo que lo compre en marzo de 1990, se han cumplido 26 años de aquel día, y creo que lo he escuchado menos de lo hubiera debido en este tiempo, me he dado cuenta hoy cuando mi reproductor hacía sonar por tercera vez «Cofee Table Song» después de acabar el disco en «Hope And Despair», la canción que cierra el álbum y le da título. El disco es mucho mejor de lo que yo recordaba, mucho mejor. Yo no había prestado mucha atención a Orange Juice, la banda que lideraba Edwyn en los 80, otra de esas bandas enmarcadas en el post-punk, y con la que también hizo discos memorables. Leí una crítica sobre este disco en Rockdelux y decidí comprármelo, lo conseguí de importación, en aquellas primeras escuchas sobre todo me quedé con la peculiar voz de Edwyn y con algunas de sus canciones, especialmente «Pushing It To The Back Of My Mind» (esta la grabé en una de las cintas más grande que he grabado nunca , «Blue Higways», algún día hablaré de ella) y «Let Me Put My Arms Around You». El disco tenía un halo de autenticidad que me encantó entonces y que me sigue fascinando ahora. Descubro ahora, me parece increíble, que en el disco colabora otro de mis artistas favoritos, Roddy Frame, del que aparecerán dos discos por aquí, uno en solitario y otro con su grupo Aztec Camera, resulta que Edwyn y Roddy son amigos, y yo no tenia ni idea. Vamos un disco perfecto lo mires por donde lo mires.
Vuelvo a escuchar «Ghost Of A Chance» y caigo rendido definitivamente. Tengo que escuchar más este disco, es uno de los más grandes re-descubrimientos que he hecho gracias a este proyecto.

Bonus En 1994, cinco años después de la edición de este disco, Edwyn Collins editó su tercer disco en solitario «Gorgeous George» que contenía el single «A Girl Like You» que se convirtió en un hit y le permitió colarse en las listas de ventas y las radio formulas, me alegre por él, nunca más volvió a aparecer ni unas ni en otras. Peor para ellos.
