Our Favourite Shop – The Style Council

Si tuviera que elegir cuales son mis veinte discos favoritos, sin

duda alguna, “Our Favourite Shop” de The Style Council, sería uno de ellos. Ya he comentado en alguna de las entradas anteriores que Paul Weller es uno de mis artistas favoritos, soy fan, sí, y también dije que este disco tendría su entrada para el solo. Con lo que está pasando en España, a pesar de que haya gente que no se quiera enterar, estos días, y mientras decidía (me decidí en medio de la escritura de esta entrada) el sentido de mi voto he encontrado el momento para hablar de “Our Favourite Shop“.

El contexto en el que se edita este disco, es el de un Reino Unido en plena era Thatcher, con una clase media/baja profundamente desencantada, ¿Os suena? Paul Weller siempre había estado muy implicado políticamente y en 1985, año de la edición de este disco, participó activamente, junto a otros artistas británicos (Billy Bragg, Lloyd Cole, Prefab Sprout, Jerry Dammers,…), en Red Wedge, un colectivo que pidió el voto activamente para el partido laborista. No consiguieron su objetivo y Margareth Thatcher fue reelegida para un tercer mandato, pero bien sea por esas ganas de cambiar el rumbo de su país, bien sea porque Paul Weller estaba en su mejor momento, Our Favourite Shop es para mí el mejor disco de Mr. Weller.

el himno “Internationalists”, más vigente hoy que nunca

Weller cantando como nunca en “A Stones Throw Away”

mi favorita del disco, “Boy Who Cried Wolf”, una de las pocas sin mensaje político y triste como ella sola.

el homenaje de Weller, “A Man of Great Promise”, al amigo y político honrado que acabó con su vida.

But you were always chained and shackled by the dirt –

And the more you saw you hated

la reivindicación es estado puro de “The Lodgers (or She Was Only a Shopkeeper’s Daughter)”

With an old school tie and a reference

And you can be all that they want you to be

la tremendamente dura, “With Everything to Lose” envuelta en una dulce melodía pero con un mensaje inequívoco

el hit con mensaje “Shout To The Top”

y la llamada a la rebeldía en “Walls Come Tumbling Down”

You can actually try changing it

Esta última es la que ha venido a mi cabeza estos días y la que me ha hecho recordar este pedazo de disco, el mensaje es perfectamente válido. Hoy más que nunca.

Realmente puedes intentar cambiarlo.
