Dexys Midnight Runners – “Too-Rye-Ay”

Dexys_Midnight_Runners_Too-Rye-Ay En la mayoría de las listas de mejores discos de los 80, incluso mejores discos del siglo XX, los Dexys Midnight Runners aparecen siempre con su primer disco “Searching For The Young Soul Rebels”, un disco enorme, y se tiende a infravalorar este “Too-Rye-Ay” y creo que la culpa la tiene el tremendo éxito mundial de “Come On Eileen”, pero creo que eso es injusto con este álbum. Incluso he visto a gente tratar a los Dexys, el nombre que usan ahora, como “one hit wonder”, por culpa de “Come On Eileen” y eso sí que injusto. Conocí a los Dexys escuchando y bailando “Come On Eileen” en los bares a mediados de los 80, y fue eso lo que me llevó a comprar este disco, es verdad que también me hizo comprar su primer disco, que puede que sea mejor que este, pero al que tengo cariño y el que me trae buenos recuerdos es “Too-Rye-Ay”. Esta mañana mientras caminaba y escuchaba el disco, he terminado de entender por que me quedé con el para mi lista, me hace feliz, muy feliz escuchar canciones como “Let’s Make This Precious” , “All In All”, la versión del clásico de Van Morrison “Jackie Wilson Said (I’m In Heaven When You Smile)” y por supuesto “Come On Eileen”, no he podido quitarme la sonrisa de la cara en todo el trayecto, incluso en las canciones más tristes. Hay discos que te hacen pensar, discos que te acompañan en tardes de lluvia, sobremesas de verano o noches de luna llena, este me hace feliz.

Kevin Rowland y sus Dexys publicarán su quinto disco en 35 años de carrera en un par de semanas, estoy casi seguro de que me volverán a hacer feliz.

Hurrah! – “Tell God I’m Here”

Hurrah_TellGod Me gusta como escribe Kiko Amat he leído sus libros, me falta el último “Chap Chap”, y leo las entradas de su blog Bendito Atraso habitualmente, no solo eso si no que comparto con él algunos de sus gustos musicales (The Style Council, Dexy’s Midnight Runners…). Fue el quién me empujó a escuchar a Hurrah! Leí en uno de los capítulos de “Mil Violines” lo mucho que le gustaban. Joer, no tenía localizado a estos tipos, un grupo que compartía discográfica, Kitchenware Records, con Prefab Sprout y The Kane Gang, y yo no sabía de su existencia, eso había que arreglarlo.

Busqué el disco en Spotify, la portada de primeras me pareció la típica de grupo con chupas de cuero de mediados de mediados de los 80 en pose de “joder como molamos”, mal empezamos. Me puse a escucharlo y… vaya! el Sr. Amat no podía estar equivocado, típico producto de los 80, sí, pero con canciones más que interesantes. Pop de guitarras intenso, rozando el AOR por momentos, pero con algo que les da un toque distinto, un toque que engancha. Ahí tenemos a “Better Time”, “Sweet Vanity” para demostrarlo y por encima de todas “If Love Could Kill”, madre mía, qué bonita!!

They Might Be Giants – “Flood”

Esto es un discazo y punto. No hay nada que discutir. Guitarras, acordeones, violines, teclados, sintetizadores, saxofones, trombones, utensilios de cocina (Sí!!, cacerolas y tenedores) todo vale para estos dos músicos. Dos Johns, Flansburgh y Linell, que formaron este grupo en 1982, They Might Be Giants, cuyo nombre es un homenaje al famoso episodio de Don Quijote de la Mancha en el que confundía unos molinos de viento con gigantes. Este “Flood” es su tercer disco el primero para una compañía grande, Elektra, esto se notó en dos cosas: primero en la promoción del disco y segundo , y si cabe más importante sobre todo desde el punto de vista musical, la producción del disco que cayó en manos de Clive Langer y Alan Winstanley, ni más ni menos., La pareja de productores que ya había producido a Madness, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Elvis Costello, The Stranglers…, hizo que las miniaturas pop de los They Might be Giants ganaran y mucho.

Fina ironía en “Lucky Ball & Chain”, posicionamiento político en “Your Racist Friend”, aires retro en “Instanbul (Not Constantinopla)” (la única versión del disco, por cierto), canciones para silbar en la ducha como “Hearing Aid” y claros singles POP como “Birdhouse in Your Soul”, todo este cocktail me encantó en aquella época y me hizo seguirles la pista hasta hoy. Unos tipos curiosos que con este disco estuvieron cerca de convertirse en megaestrellas, aunque me temo que no era lo que buscaban, y que en este año 2015 han visto editado su disco décimo séptimo “Glean”, manteniendo una clientela fiel, yo el primero de sus clientes.
