Marvin Gaye – “What’s Going On?”

“What’s Going On?” Es una obra capital de la historia de la música, la obra maestra de Marvin Gaye, así lo reconoce la critica especializada, supuso una revolución en la manera de hacer y entender la música negra, sobre todo el SOUL. El SOUL hasta entonces había sido fundamentalmente música para expresar sentimientos profundos, para divertirse, para bailar… rara vez se había usado para protestar, vamos a salvar “A Change Is Gonna Come” de Sam Cooke, o para hacer lucha social, al menos directamente. Menos aun se había hecho un disco conceptual, porque justo eso es “What’s Going On?”, una dura crítica social de los Estados Unidos de principios de los 70 vistos a través de los ojos de un excombatiente negro de la guerra de Vietnam. Marvin Gaye compuso, interpretó y produjo todo el disco. Ya conté cómo llegué hasta Marvin Gaye cuando hablaba de Paul Young, pero este no fue el primer disco que compré de el, ese privilegio lo tuvo “Midnight Love” un disco mucho más accesible y que triunfó en todos el mundo gracias al bombazo que fue “Sexual Healing” y a que fue su último disco antes de su temprana muerte a manos de su padre tras una discusión justo el día antes de que cumpliera 45 años. Nos dejó un legado de enormes canciones y esta obra maestra.
