The Waterboys – “This Is The Sea”
Ya mencioné a The Waterboys cuando hablaba de The Church y su “Under The Milky Way”, no porque la música de ambos grupos tenga mucho que ver si no por el enlace invisible que en mi cabeza existe entre la canción de The Church y el “The Whole Of The Moon” de The Waterboys. A principios de 1984 había escuchado, probablemente en Radio3, algunas canciones de los dos primeros discos del grupo de Mike Scott, me llamó especialmente la atención “A Girl Called Johnny” del primero de ellos, pero eso fue todo.
Cuando en 1985 editaron “This Is The Sea”, su tercer disco largo, y escuché por primera vez “The Whole Of The Moon” , literalmente corrí a a Madrid Rock a hacerme con el vinilo, no podía parar de escuchar aquella canción, que me sonaba épica, misteriosa y romántica a la vez. Para mi grata sorpresa “This Is The Sea” no era solo aquella canción cuya letra no comprendía, ahora no es que la comprenda mucho más, sino que había muchas más canciones brillantes. “Don’t Bang Drum” que me llenaba de energía positiva, la emocionante “Spirit” con solo piano y la voz de Mike Scott, la vibrante “The Pan Within”, “Medicine Bow, “Old england”….. Todo el disco es intenso y épico, aunque tuvieron mucho más exito comercial con su disco posterior, “Fisherman’s Blues”, en el que su estilo musical giró a otros derroteros más folk y alejados de la épica de sus primeros trabajos,para mí este es su mejor disco por mucha diferencia.

The Church – “Starfish”
“Under The Milky Way” fue la 
canción que me empujó a este disco y a The Church, imagino que como le pasó a mucha gente, un temazo como este es difícil de obviar.Otra banda australiana para alimentar mi sueño, sin llegar a la altura de The Go-Betweens o The Triffids, al menos para mí.y quizás más inclinados al rock que al pop de los grupos anteriores. Este “Starfish” les puso en el mapa, era su quinto álbum y tuvieron que irse a Estados Unidos para producir el disco lo que les abrió el mercado americano, eso más la gran difusión de “Under The Milky Way” y su éxito en las listas de ventas hizo el resto, aquel año 1988 The Church se colaron en mi banda sonora personal. El disco tenía otras canciones dignas de mención como “Antena” o “Reptile”, aunque yo me sigo quedando con “Under The Millky Way” que es parte de mi trilogía de canciones “astronómicas” junto a “The Killing Moon” de Echo and the Bunnymen y “The Whole Of The Moon” de The Waterboys.

Deacon Blue – “Raintown”
Deacon Blue, lo contaba hace cuatro días al hablar de Danny Wilson, toman su nombre de una canción de Steely Dan, canción preciosa por otra parte, pero eso es otra historia. La criticas de la época al editarse el disco (1987) hablaban de un cruce entre The Waterboys, imagino que por la intensidad en determinadas canciones, y Prefab Sprout, imagino por los juegos vocales chica-chico en otras. Pero ni eran los Waterboys y ni mucho menos Prefab Sprout, eso no le quita mérito a este disco, vamos a dejarlo claro, es más creo que las comparaciones le hacen más daño que otra cosa.
Yo conocí el disco por su primer single “Dignity”, que no paró de sonar por todas partes en aquel 1987, y es un de esos discos que yo llamo “bonitos”, desde la preciosa portada, con una fotografía de la lluviosa Glasgow (la “raintown del título del disco), hasta las canciones que los componen, con esos coros de Lorraine McIntosh, que provocaron la comparación con Prefab Sprout. El disco no baja el nivel en sus once cortes, aunque mis favoritas son “Dignity”, “He Looks Like A Spencer Tracy Now”, “Loaded” y “Love’s Great Fears”. Deacon Blue siguen en activo pero nunca volvieron a recuperar el nivel de este primer disco.
