Stan Campbell – “Stan Campbell”
Ya conté por aquí que Stan Campbell fue la llave que abrió la puerta de entrada al mundo de The Specials. Stan se hizo famoso como el cantante del himno “Free Nelson Mandela” después grabo este, su único disco en solitario. Un disco que tuvo muy poca suerte, aunque la merecía, tanto las canciones propias como las versiones, brutal la de “Crawfish” que popularizara Elvis Presley, tenían su encanto. La voz de Stan Campbell, muy soulera, fluia por ellas y las convertía en piezas deliciosas, un disco muy al estilo de los tres primeros de Sade, (otra de mis favoritas que también está en la lista). Las canciones propias como “You’ll Never Know” o “Seven More Days” conviven con la versiones fantásticas de “Don’t Let me Be Misunderstood”, “Strange Fruit” o la ya mencionada “Crawfish”.
Una pena que el disco no tuviera continuidad, no sabía porqué, hoy al investigar un poco sobre Stan Campbell he descubierto que vive internado en un sanatorio mental desde hace más de 15 años condenado por abusos a menores, una lástima.

The Specials – “Stereo-Typical: A’s, B’s & Rarities”
El ska, el reggae y el rocksteady son géneros musicales que yo asocio a estar de fiesta, me levantan el ánimo. The Specials, con Jerry Dammers a la cabeza, se lanzaron a un revivan ska a finales de los 70 que les llevó a la cabecera de las listas británicas, canciones como “A Message To You Rudy” o “Too Much Too Young”, canciones estas de su primer álbum producido por el gran Elvis Costello y que eran versiones de viejos éxitos jamaicanos. Yo llegué a ellos, curiosamente , a través del primer disco en solitario de uno de sus vocalistas, Stan Campbell, le escuché en Radio 3, le compré y eso me llevo a indagar quien era. Stan Campbell era el vocalista de “Free Nelson Mandela”, la canción que no paró de sonar en 1984 y que se convirtió en bandera de la lucha anti-apartheid. Dicha canción estaba en el disco “In The Studio” de The Special A.K.A (la otra encarnación de The Specials), lo que a su vez me llevó a conectar con The Specials, un camino lleno de saltos, pero que mereció la pena. Ska y música políticamente combativa, unión perfecta que en esta recopilación de singles y rarezas de The Specials alcanzan su máxima expresión. Mensajes que siguen siendo plenamente válidos 30 años después.
Un disco que aún me levanta la moral.
