Sam Cooke es , da igual que muriera hace casi 50 años, uno de los grandes del Soul, para mí el mas grande. Mi relación con él empezó de una manera completamente casual. Corría el año 1987 y a vuelta de mi primer viaje solo a Inglaterra me había aficionado a comprar revistas de música Inglesa, en una de ellas, la desaparecida Melody Maker, leí un crítica de un disco recopilatario de un cantante negro de Soul (Sam Cooke- The Man and His Music), la puntuación que le daba el critico era “Lots out of 10”, o sea, “mucho mas que 10”. Aquello despertó mi curiosidad y me hicé con el vinilo, los dos vinilos para ser exacto, el álbum era doble.
La intuición de que aquel crítico podía tener razón cambió me vida, al menos la parte musical de ella, y me abrió las puertas de un mundo que no conocía, el SOUL, probablemente mi estilo favorito desde entonces.
Elegir una canción del gran Sam Cooke es tarea imposible, no hay una mala, pero este “Another Saturday Night” me acompañó y mucho a finales de los 80 y ese recuerdo es el que ha vuelto hoy.
