Después de 86 álbumes de estudio este “The Man Comes Around”, el número 87 fue el último disco en vida del gran Johnny Cash y el cuarto de su serie “American Recordings”, las grabaciones que Rick Rubin, el productor y fundador de Def Jam Records, produjo para el en su sello del mismo nombre. He conocido múltiples casos de estrellas de la música que han “sufrido” homenajes o recibido sentidos tributos, al final de sus vidas, pero como lo que hizo Rick Rubin con Johnny Cash ninguno. Cash era una sombra de lo que había sido cuando Rubin le ofreció grabar una serie de discos para su recién renombrado sello, descarnados, prácticamente solo voz y guitarra, el testamento del “hombre de negro“. Este “The Man Comes Around” es el que más me gusta de la serie de seis discos, las versiones de “In My Life” (The Beatles), “Personal Jesus” (Depeche Mode), “The Man Comes Around” (el mismo), “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (Simon & Garfunkel) son absolutamente increíbles, pero por encima de todas la escalofriante versión del “Hurt” de Nine Inch Nails, tienes que ser de piedra para no emocionarte escuchando esta canción.
